Escaping the winter months and heading off on holidays (I know I am!). Just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean you can skip out on the self care. Holidays is the perfect time for look after yourself and you do not want to get sick. Here’s some tips for staying healthy on holidays.

Plane travel

Plane Travel

Traveling on a plane is fraught with dangers in getting sick. Take heat patches and ice packs if you have a current injury you are treating – the chemist has self activating options that don’t need a freezer or microwave.

Stock up on your favourite supplements and start taking them in the week or two leading up to your holiday – especially vitamins like echinacea and olive leaf extract, to help you ward of other peoples germs that travel so easily in the contained environment of the plane.

Hydrate! I might say this a few times but staying hydrated on your plane journey will help you once you arrive at your holiday destination. The pressurised air conditioned environment is dehydrating and your bodies immune system can’t function properly without water.

Move around. Deep vein thrombosis is a real risk on long haul flights. Not to mention your muscles stiffening over long periods of sitting. If you’re drinking enough, you’ll have to get up anyway.

If you are sick when you head off, consider a face mask to help keep your germs to yourself. Take some hand sanitiser and be sure to use it after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose. Your fellow passengers will thank you.

Road trip

Car Travel

Long hours of car travel, especially when you’re doing the driving, can take it’s toll on your body. Take regular breaks to walk around, stretch and refresh your mind. Rest when you’re feeling drowsy. Again, hydrate.

Take the tools you need to do your normal self care routine, if you have space. Foam roller, spikey ball, magnesium cream, heat patches and ice packs. They all come in handy.

Don’t forget your normal routine

Another tip for staying healthy on holidays is to keep up with your normal stretch routine to look after your regular aches and pains. Put heat packs on. Take your magnesium supplement. Whatever it is you normally do.

Don’t forget, a holiday is a great time to get a massage!

Eat well

Remember to get your fresh foods and eat well. Stocking up on snacks for the plane or car ride is tempting but our bodies need whole foods to stay well. Pack vegetable sticks and hummus or fruit as well as a few sneaky chips.

Sleep

Sleep well

If there was ever a good time to catch up on sleep, holidays is it. Maybe you’re in a plush hotel room where you can sleep on a five star bed. Or maybe you’re on a camp mat and sleep might not come so easy. Try and make it as comfortable as you can and get the hours in.

I made myself a chamomile tincture that is great for a natural bedtime remedy. It helps me sleep and is great for any aches and pains at the end of the day.

Also, did I mention to hydrate?

Other packing tips;

  • noise cancelling headphones to relax while others are around
  • your favourite essential oil blend for relaxation – a few drops on the shower floor or a dab on the wrists for some aromatherapy on the go
  • Soluble supplements to pop in your water bottle

Please note, I will be away from the 16th to the 31st of July. Stay tuned on my instagram for holiday snaps 🙂
